Kikanbo Ramen Melbourne Nominated for the 2026 Melbourne & Australian Design Awards

We are excited to announce that Kikanbo Ramen Melbourne has been submitted for the 2026 Melbourne and Australian Design Awards, celebrating creativity, innovation and excellence in Australian architecture and interior design.

A Tokyo Dining Experience Reimagined for Melbourne

Kikanbo Melbourne is a bold, multi sensory dining experience that brings one of Tokyo’s most iconic ramen houses to the heart of the CBD.

Designed by Rptecture Architects, the restaurant interior captures the drama, energy and sensory theatre of the original Kikanbo in Tokyo while giving it a distinct Melbourne identity. From the warm red glow of custom feature lighting to the striking display of oni demon masks, the space draws diners into an atmosphere that is as unforgettable as the ramen itself.

Designing for the Five Senses

Kikanbo’s signature concept of “ramen to delight all five senses” guided every part of the design process. The rhythm of taiko drums, the heat of open flames and the aroma of spices are translated into a visual and spatial experience that engages the senses from every angle.

Key design highlights include:

  • Custom lighting that spells out Kikanbo Ramen in glowing script, serving as both signage and ambient lighting.

  • A metal shelf feature cut with the restaurant’s name, casting layered shadows reminiscent of fire and spice.

  • Rows of oni masks that lead guests from the entrance through the dining space, creating a sense of ritual and anticipation.

Every element, from the club mace inspired pendants above the bar to the traditional Japanese curtains at the doorway, ensures that the spirit of Kikanbo is fully expressed in its Melbourne setting.

Balancing Intensity and Comfort

Translating Kikanbo’s fierce Tokyo atmosphere into an Australian context required a balance between intensity and comfort. Melbourne diners appreciate immersive experiences, but also value warmth and clarity in design.

Materials and finishes were chosen to capture the raw energy of Kikanbo’s original store while meeting Australian construction and compliance standards. The result is an interior that combines theatrical red lighting and bold textures with efficient layouts and durable finishes — a space that feels both thrilling and welcoming.

Kikanbo Ramen Melbourne showcases the fusion of Japanese cultural storytelling and Melbourne’s design sensibility. It is a space where architecture, craftsmanship and dining come together to create a truly immersive restaurant experience.
